about Amy Hosotsuji
I am finally coming into the identity and path that I always saw patterns of in my life but could never quite pinpoint what it was that I kept being drawn to doing in this lifetime. The classic existential millennial I was, and still am.
I've landed on this single design question for my life that has come up for me over and over in the various sectors, fields and communities I worked in: "How can we design and build a better version of our world together that serves all of us?" However I think my personal design question within this question is, "How do we as humanity evolve to the point where we can actually have that conversation constructively?" and even more personally, "What do I need to be/ do to become the greatest, fullest version of myself?" I'm sure these will have more iterations as I go on this journey :)
I am currently based between the small island of Bermuda and Toronto, Canada working on my initiative The Futures Network. Originally I'm from Toronto, Canada with my ancestral roots in Japan. I have played competitive tennis since the age of 10 and am proud to say I've played the beautiful game for over 20 years now (pretty cool to be able to say that I've done anything for that long!). I've lived in various countries: Brooklyn, New York City where I did my undergrad in Anthropology and Philosophy, South Korea where I taught English for a while, and now Bermuda!
My influences come from every single life experience I've had and everything I've been exposed to. Some of my favourite influencers in the world are the careful, intentional, and meditative approach that the Japanese culture takes for designing interiors, products, art and cities as well as my parents who either knowingly or unknowingly adapted their Japanese culture to life in Canada. The way Japanese culture is able to seamlessly mesh ultra modernism with the traditional is incredible.
I am heavily influenced by the beautiful movements by people of colour, activists, changemakers, entrepreneurs and healers around the world who prove to us everyday of the beauty, worth and value of humanity, of their cultures, traditions, and contributions. My mentors who have committed their lives to furthering connection, empathy, compassion, healing and sustainability in communities around the world inspire me all the time. I've been influenced by my own experiences with trauma, abuse, neglect, racism, discrimination, sexism, codependency and more. I consider myself a survivor of abuse and PTSD and now working on thriving :)
All in all, I want to relate, connect, heal and advocate. I contribute my superpowers and my inner knowing to communities who press on to elevate us to a higher state of being, existence and relating to one another. My body as my vehicle to get me there, my voice and hands to write, record and speak. Thanks for coming to see a little bit of who I am!
